`Puff Daddy' eyes sports agent gig - Chicago Sun-Times

NEW YORK Rap performer, songwriter and producer Sean 'Puffy'Combs is pondering a career as a sports agent, a spokesman for theNational Football League Players Association said.

Combs, who performs under the name 'Puff Daddy,' last weekcontacted the NFL Players Association about its requirements forbecoming a certified contract adviser, said Carl Francis, spokesmanfor the union.

The 27-year-old Combs hasn't submitted an application, Francissaid. Only union-certified contract advisers can represent playersduring contract negotiations with clubs, the union said.Francis said that Combs, chief executive of New York-based BadBoy Entertainment, is still under consideration by Heisman Trophywinner Charles Woodson.Combs wouldn't comment, and Woodson didn't return a phone call.Francis said the union 'strongly' considers a candidate'seducation when deciding on certification.Prospective agents must attend one of three mandatory meetings.Combs already has missed the two held in Indianapolis. The last oneis scheduled for Friday in Los Angeles, Francis said.'It'll be tough for Puffy to become certified now,' he said.Combs' hits as a performer include the current 'Been Around theWorld' and last year's smash 'I'll Be Missing You' (with FaithEvans). He produced many of 1997's biggest singles and has sevennominations for next week's Grammy Awards.Combs studied business management at Howard University, Francissaid. In 1990, Combs - recently named one of the 40 most powerfulpeople in entertainment by Entertainment Weekly magazine - leftHoward before his junior year to accept an internship at UptownRecords.Within a year, he became vice president of Uptown's talent andmarketing division, helping guide the careers of suchmultiplatinum-selling artists as Mary J. Blige and Jodeci.By 1993, he was offered a multimillion-dollar distributionagreement with Arista Records to form his own label, Bad Boy.
